She then moved on to the San Francisco District Attorney's Office, where she served as the head of the Career Criminal Unit. In 2003, Harris was elected as the District Attorney of San Francisco, becoming the first woman, the first African American woman, and the first Indian American woman to hold that position.

In 2010, Harris was elected as the Attorney General of California, becoming the first woman, the first African American woman, and the first Indian American woman to hold that position as well. During her time as Attorney General, Harris focused on criminal justice reform and fought against mortgage fraud and human trafficking.

In 2016, Harris was elected to the U.S. Senate from California, becoming the second African American woman and the first Indian American woman to serve in the Senate. During her time in the Senate, Harris served on several committees, including the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee and the Judiciary Committee.
